Champagne

I wish I could do the proper Miss Gracious Living thing and send all of you a handwritten note (on pretty Smythson stationery, of course). Your letters, calls, emails, blog posts, and comments of support have lifted our spirits during the close of Southern Accents, and it has been comforting to know that the magazine has meant so much to so many over the years.

The staff got together on the last day to share a few laughs, a few tears, and a lot of Champagne. And though the magazine comes to an end and most of the staff has now scattered (on to do great things, I know, as they are the best), our love of Southern style will most definitely endure. Thank you and we raise a virtual toast to all of you: May you always find life beautiful, entertaining, and gracious!

Karen- I was just poking around yesterday on the site looking for a way to email you. Your work has been inspiring to us and your blog has been wonderful. I always looked forward to a new one. All the best with your next endeavor.

Karen, Best of luck to you in whatever you and your staff do next. I bought several copies of the magazine yesterday (in addition to my subscription) - some sort of "grief hoarding", I suppose! Your very special magazine will be sorely missed.

Southern Accents has been one of my favorite magazines and is the best for inspiring enduring style. I hope you will continue with your online presence as I've seen reported in the press.

Thank you!

I have to say I was quite upset to recieve this email. I had just begun my subscription and this is the first notification, I have that the publication was ending. I have paid for a 2 year subscription and recieved one issue. It would have been nice to have some additional information Will subscribers be reimbursed for the remaining subscription. As my first experience, this is a very poor one.

Posted by:Sandra Ragsdle | September 02, 2009 at 12:06 PM

Sandra, I'm not sure what email you're referring to, but I apologize that you have had a poor experience. The news of the magazine's suspension is still relatively new and we are all dealing with the business of closing a magazine, which takes a lot of time, as I'm discovering.

Subscribers will be notified with a postcard within the next few weeks. Our circulation department tells me that our subscriptions will be transferred to Southern Living. Those who already subscribe to Southern Living will have their subscriptions extended. If you have any questions or would prefer a refund, please call our customer service department at 800/882-0183.

Many thanks...no one is more sorry than I am that we are not continuing to send you Southern Accents!

Karen, I'm so sorry to be chiming in so late on this! I wish you and your staff the very best of luck in your future endeavors. Southern Accents will be truly missed.

I am an Interior Designer, and have enjoyed your magazine for the entire fifteen years of my career. Is there any way we can purchase back issues?
Is there any possiblity of a comeback?
All of your readers are going to miss you.....your magazine showcased the best in my industry!

The loss of Southern Accents is the end of such a lovely era. Thanks to you and to the staff for aptly identifying the graceful subtleties of a Southern home and for gently guiding many of us through the process of creating one. I will miss you sorely but will hope for the chance to subscribe to an on-line Southern Accents soon!

Karen,

My decorator friends still can't believe they will have to live without "Southern Accents." It is hearbreaking to see a beautiful magazine with such an engaged reader base cease publication. Any hope that another publisher would want to buy the title and the fabulous brand equity it has?
I hope your staff moves on to great things!

Thank you for being the inspirational light with which I have used to help realize my decorating dreams.

How sad for all of us! Southern Accents was the No.1 magazine I would recommend to customer's to buy and read before remodeling or re-designing their homes. A small town in Kansas just lost their major design resource.

How terribly disappointing! Yours is a rare, quality magazine filled with beautifully appointed homes and wonderful classic ideas. I suppose good taste has gone by the wayside along with manners and all other gentrified concepts. I always looked forward to browsing your magazine for inspiration. Your magazine will be sadly missed in our household.

I am so diappointed I have been subscribing and puchaseing Southern Accents says the mid 90's. My favorite issue is Nov/Dec I have every holiday issue since 1995 until 2008 I am only missing 1997. I look back at these every holiday for timeless inspiration and beleive it or not everytime I also see something new. Thank you for giving us such elegant modern feasts for our eyes and homes that is southern style at it's best.

Dear Karen:
Will follow up with a written note but want to express how disappointed I am with the departure of Southern Accents. As former owners of Southern Progress Corporation who sold to Time in 1985, our family has become very fond of your magazine over the years and will always embrace it as one of the best in southern history. I feel certain that your talents will continue to serve you well and wish you luck with your future endeavors.

I'm at loss with words. I loved your magazine and gave me hope that I to could have a beautiful home for my family. I dreamed right along with all that you gave. Thank you.

As a very young married woman, my mother-in-law first introduced me to your beautiful magazine the year you began. Each time a new issue appeared, I would grab a cup of tea, and spend the afternoon pouring over every word. I have a large bookcase now filled with nearly every issue since the 70's, and I must say that true Southern Elegance stands the test of time very well. It breaks my heart that such a beloved icon will no longer be published. Christmas will not be the same without your spectacular issue. To all who have contributed through the years, heartfelt thanks for the thousands of hours of genuine pleasure you have given to your many subscribers. I wish you all the best!

I just heard about Southern Accents, and am so disappointed. Out of all magazines I have to choose from, I chose yours; it is first class and always very well done. Southern Accents has inspired me and given me many hours of enjoyment. I save these magazines and refer back to them repeatedly. I am so sorry that it will no longer be published, but do wish everyone involved the very best.

This is so sad. When I received the card in today's mail I felt as if I had been punched in the stomach! Is that silly? No! It's the truth. Southern Accents is above and beyond the vast majority of publications available. Especially the shelter magazines. So well-rounded, so elegant, so accessible. Of the 20 plus magazines I subsribe to, yours is the most enjoyable and useful. Thank You, Thank you. And all the best for the future.

I received my notification on this sad news just yesterday. I immediately called Mom to share the surprize. My Mom, sister and I loved this magazine. Two of us suscribed to it. There is nothing else like it out there. You will be missed.

I have been in love with Southern Accents since the late 80s. This is such a sadness. I have spent many hours over the years dreaming over the beuatiful home published in the magazine. Many thanks to the magazine, the designers and home owners for the hours of relaxation and visual pleasure!

I have subscriptions to so many magazines but Southern Accents is definitely my favorite (and that's coming from a Northerner!) I am so sad to see it go.

Posted by:Susan | October 29, 2009 at 01:11 PM

Words cannot express how disappointed I was to receive the notice announcing the end of Southern Accents. I have had a subscritpion for more than 20 years and my mother has had one since the beginning. I can still remember as a little girl, looking at all the beautiful and homes and dreaming of my own one day. As a southerner living in Seattle, it was always so refreshing and conforting too peruse the gracious style and endearing Southern lifestyle each edition. I can't tell you how many ideas I received from the magazine. Thank you for the years of timeless beauty and exceptional quality. I will miss this magazine terribly and wish all the contributors many blessings!

My Mother, sister & I feel like we're losing a best friend. I've keep every copy I ever bought and still refer to back issues. This magazine is a CLASS ACT. Is there anything that can be done to bring it back?

Posted by:Linda | November 01, 2009 at 04:00 PM

I echo every sentiment said here in the last few months...I may be a Northerner at heart, but I am a devotee of classic, elegant Southern decor and will miss Southern Accents terribly. I have never been as loyal to a magazine and SA will always be the standard in exquisite beauty and gracious living. I feel at great sense of loss. Thank you for every wonderful, inspiring issue.

Will miss Southern Accents dearly... Thanks to all you've given us already and wishing all the staff the best in their future endeavors.

Writing from New England, subscribing for 30 years, I am perplexed and not a little bit outraged that your parent company would remove an exquisite, quality publication from an increasingly dreary magazine landscape. I would have paid more for my subscription and I bet other subscribers feel the same. I hope they will reconsider.

Just a note to let you know how much Southern Accents will be missed ... best of luck to such a wonderful & talented staff who turned out a beautiful magazine year after year.

As a Californian with Georgia genes, I treasured your wonderful magazine! What will I do now? Any suggestions?

Thanks for a publication that I REALLY looked forward to receiving in the mail!
