SoAccSeptOct09Cover

As many of you may have heard by now, Southern Accents is closing and the September-October issue will be our last. For the past 32 years, it has been our great privilege to work with so many talented, creative people to showcase beautiful houses and gardens, and to be a champion of the gracious lifestyle of this wonderful region we call home. We deeply appreciate the loyalty and support that our readers–both of the magazine and our blog–have shown us. You are the reason it has been such a joy to be a part of this industry and we appreciate you more than we can say.

Karen,

I think most of us are still processing this. I grew up with the magazine and can't imagine the holiday season without it.

You introduced me to Ruthie Sommers, Suzanne Rheinstein, Becky Vizzard, Amelia Handegan, Jane Scott Hodges, Julia Reed, Thomas Jayne, Heidi F...the list goes on and on.

And the MGL blog was such a breath of fresh air, a bright spot in the day. We are all hoping the spirit of MGL will live on perhaps in some new form!

I found out by way of the Material Girls blog, and I am deeply saddened. You are and will always be the design magazine of the South.

We are all so, so sad about this in the blogsphere, as I'm sure you know. I'm thankful that the website will remain so we can revisit this wonderful magazine and its inspirational content in the future.

Posted by:Jeannine @ Small & Chic | August 07, 2009 at 12:41 PM

Oh my! Well this is just so sad! The every-other-month moment of magazine arrival has been my "glass of lemonade" moment for such a wonderful while. And we all know those moments come too few and far between the hustle and hurry.
Please keep us posted on where we can look for Miss Gracious Living in the future--all of them, as I'm sure so many have contributed to the inspirations and musings of the blog.

I am so sad about this. I loved Southern Accents; the beautiful homes and seasonal decorations were such an inspiration. Thank you Southern Accents staff for the wonderful magazine you gave us for so many years! We will miss you.

Posted by:Lauren | August 07, 2009 at 01:33 PM

This was my favorite magazine!! I was always so excited to get an SA magazine and sit for hours perusing. I'm so sorry. God bless you in your new endeavors.

Posted by:Brandy | August 07, 2009 at 01:57 PM

So sad to hear the news. Southern Accents was truly my favorite magazine, always inspiring. I hope the website can still operate and continue to inspire readers.

This is a sad day for us all. I will truly miss Southern Accents. You will be missed, but never forgotten. To every staff member, thank you for putting together such a wonderful magazine.

Posted by:Aletha | August 07, 2009 at 03:42 PM

I just could not be any sadder! for all of those who have worked so hard to put out such a wonderful, inspiring magazine, issue after issue and for those of us who have carefully poured over every page and every frame....this is true heartbreak! I commented on Joni's blog today: maybe it can be brought back one day, like Victoria was. I can't imagine my holiday season without SA!!!

Posted by:Vickie H | August 07, 2009 at 07:29 PM

I am attempting to process the future without this beautiful publication. I cannot believe this future is true. Each contributor will be missed and remembered every month. This is a very sad passing.

Posted by:jean yewell | August 07, 2009 at 08:03 PM

I remember going to a "field trial" with my husband and his bird dogs.I would race out to watch one of his dogs compete and race back to his suv to grab my Southern Accents and read a piece on antique silver, the next time, a story on a gifted landscape architect, then one of Julia Reed's quippy and inspiring profiles of one of her soirees, etc. etc. etc. I love my husband and i love dogs, but retreating to Southern Accents in between the trials was like being back in college in an Art History class, or at Winterthur Museum, or strolling through a beautiful garden.two worlds in one day..How i will miss those glorious forays into the world according to Southern Accents, its splendid Editor, Karen Carroll, and her top notch staff!

Posted by:margot shaw | August 07, 2009 at 08:37 PM

* Talk about a heavy heart tonight~~~ wow, it's always been such a classic, inspirational publication. Sad, sad news...

Posted by:Linda/ Mom in AZ | August 07, 2009 at 10:19 PM

I am just heartsick over this. Southern Accents has brought so much beauty into the world, and will be sorely missed.

Posted by:Cyndia Montgomery | August 07, 2009 at 10:39 PM

Well, this has to be the saddest publishing news I've ever had. I'm going to miss you. So reason to race from store to store anymore looking for the new issue. Waiting for it - driving all over town to get it. That's all over now. Too sad. That's for all the memories. I've got a million.

Posted by:joni webb | August 08, 2009 at 04:55 AM

I am stunned! Time-Warner should be ashamed for taking away such a wonderful magazine that has, for decades, documented fine southern interiors and gardens and raised the bar for countless readers to better themselves and their surroundings...this truly is a sad day...

Posted by:andy wallace | August 08, 2009 at 09:04 AM

I am so sad to hear of the closing of Southern Accents. As a Southern transplant living in Washington state I would look forward to Southern Accents arriving in my mailbox. It allowed me to feel connected to my Southern roots thousands of miles away. The antiques, the art, the gardens, the homes, the featured authors and books… you will be missed.

Best of luck to all of the staff.

When was the decision made to stop publishing SA? Is there any chance that it will be reconsidered? This is the one magazine that I have consistently read for the past 32 years (which is alos the number of years I have been married). I feel like I am being divorced. It is such a beautiful publication, full of inspiration and ideas. It has sheer pleasure to read each issue, with the to die for homes and gardens. Are there any plans for a magazine to fill this void?

Posted by:connee | August 08, 2009 at 06:51 PM

Yes, Andy, Time Warner should be ashamed, and if they had the business sense to support the gorgeous editorial with creative and competent salesmanship, we would have our Southern Accents back. Just where do they think the future of the magazine business really is? Surely not in their dated shopworn publications out of NYC! Southern Accents was a peerless design magazine that deserved support through tough times. Our world has just become a far less beautiful place.

Posted by:Barbara | August 08, 2009 at 08:12 PM

When I discovered Southern Accents, it was as if I'd finally found the decorating magazine that was meant for ME -- and I live in New Jersey! It is the most beautiful and elegant publication -- and not stuffy! Time Warner is making a huge mistake. TIME magazine itself is a worthless slip of a rag now -- but Southern Accents? Irreplaceable! ... I am saddened.

Posted by:Cass | August 09, 2009 at 11:14 PM

I apologize -- it is not Time-Warner company, but rather Time, Inc., that is owner of Southern Accents (and Southern Living) -- that's the company to complain to!

I will really miss this magazine! I have saved most of the copies that I've bought over the years and I always love to look back over them. They never go out of style and now I'm glad I have them to remind me what a joy this magazine has been.

Posted by:Sherrie | August 10, 2009 at 12:29 AM

I can't even begin to express my dismay! There are so few magazines worth subscribing to, and to loose one that has consistently graced my coffee table is just too much.

Posted by:Celeste | August 10, 2009 at 10:52 AM

Many of you have commented on how you will miss going through the holiday season without Southern Accents. However, our Christmas special edition of the magazine will be on newsstands at the end of September. If you're a devotee of the magazine, you'll recognize the splendid designs from previous issues, but now they're all in one issue! Enjoy, and thanks for all the warm wishes!

This is so sad! The magazine will be greatly missed, but I hope you all will move on to bigger and better things.

I heard the news from a friend, and didn't believe it was true, until I checked it out for myself. This will definitely be a huge loss. I had planned to pare back my magazine subscriptions, keeping only this one. Now what???

Posted by:Becky | August 10, 2009 at 05:00 PM

You have become one of my favorite blogs, along with SA being one of my favorite reads. That is great news though about the Christmas issue!

Posted by:Laura Casey Interiors | August 10, 2009 at 05:50 PM

First I have to say I am stunned. Second having had the honor of both winning and judging the ASID/Southern Accents Design Awards I have met the editors and leadership of this publication. For me this is a major loss of something I have come to enjoy every month, but for the human side I am even more at a loss to accept. May all of you take what you have made here and build on it elsewhere.

I was shocked to hear the news.... I feel like I am losing a dear friend - its arrival in my mail always gave me something to look forward to - finding that quiet time to relish every page. Shame on Time... they should have found some liberal rag amongst their magazines to close rather than this one.....

Posted by:Virginia | August 10, 2009 at 10:45 PM

Karen,
I can honestly say I have never worked with a more gracious and lovely shelter magazine staff.
SA was the first magazine that featured my work and I proudly have that cover displayed in my office.
The magazine will be greatly missed but will never be out of mind.
My best to you and all the marvelous editors.
Very truly yours.

I concur with the many loyal readers of Southern Accents that this is truly disappointing. I have relied on your lovely magazine for years for inspiration and ideas. I so happy that I kept many of your past issues. I wish all of you on the staff many blessings and I extend a heartfeld thanks for your commitment to showcase beautiful Southern homes for all these years. Your magazine will be sorely missed!

I was devastated to hear the news of what many of us consider a loss. There was something really special about receiving the latest SA issue in the mail whereby the day suddenly turned a little brighter. From a human standpoint, best wishes to all who worked so hard to deliver such an extraordinary product. I look forward to seeing your impact in some other capacity - whatever it may be.

Posted by:Pembroke Interiors, Ltd. | August 11, 2009 at 01:17 PM

I'm so sad to hear the news! It was truly a great publication. The designers at my firm, myself included, always found such inspiration in your magazine. We were even beginning to prepare our submission for the 2009 design competition.

I wish all of you the best of luck in the future!

Posted by:Lauren McKay | August 11, 2009 at 01:50 PM

I am so deeply saddened by this news. I, too, feel as if I am losing a close friend of so many years. My only comfort is having every issue of SA since 1980 (most in mint condition) on my bookshelves. These past issues will be my comfort for years to come! Best wishes and warmest regards to the talented SA team in their future endeavors. You are all a HUGE talent to the design and gardening world. We all wish you only the very best to come!

After a period of self imposed holiday from the computer, I have returned to this very sad news. I have enjoyed this magazine for such a long time. I can't imagine not having it in hand. Will everything be gone, including the web installment?

What???? I just discovered the magazine and decided I would order it lieu of another similiar magazine I receive. I suggest you reconsider this decision.
Thank you.

Karen,
To say I am bummed about the end of SA is a gross understatement. I just can't believe it! I know I am not alone in saying that SA was a true representation of what's best about Interiors and Design and, more specifically, interiors and design in the South. With you at the helm, SA was better than ever. I will very much miss you, SA and all the people that made it what it has been for as long as I can remember. Thank you for your committment and class all these years!

Posted by:annechovie | August 12, 2009 at 10:46 PM

I am so so sad! I was so excited to have written my first story for SA. I guess this means it will never see the light of day. I hope MHI keeps going...

Posted by:Carrie | August 13, 2009 at 07:37 AM

So devastated to hear the news about SA!! What a terrible mistake on the part of Time Warner!! SA is one of the classics with a very talented staff and a hugh reader base. Always such a beautiful and inspiring publication. Something this exquisite must return ... and soon!!!

Posted by:bhagan | August 14, 2009 at 01:18 PM

It is sad to realize that Southern Accent will be no more. As a reader the loss of another design magazine is heartbreaking. I know the economics of publishing. But it will be truley missed.
Hopefully when the economy changes you can bring it back.

Posted by:Susan Hampton | August 15, 2009 at 10:41 AM

Karen - the last "note from the editor" was so genuine and kind that I actually clipped and framed it---want to remind myself to always appreciate and value my own sense of style. It touched my heart. Thank you to you and all your team for all of your professional contributions but most of all for your lovely sense of reality for your readers.

Posted by:Lyn | August 15, 2009 at 08:12 PM

The end of Southern Accents magazine is a distressing occurrence continuing in the printed press. Will someone please contact the 400,000 subscribers about having the subscription fees support the publication instead of the advertiser revenues? I would gladly pay more to keep my printed magazines! I suspect most of the other subscribers would too. Please….before we lose anymore printed magazines!

Posted by:Martha | August 17, 2009 at 08:33 AM

This is truly devastating news! What a mistake!!! There is NO OTHER PUBLICATION like SA...where in world will I get my "FIX"??? Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help "undo" this disappointment to all of the loyal Southern Accent subscribers.

Posted by:Cyndi B | August 17, 2009 at 05:55 PM

There is truly no substitute for Southern Accents - a one of a kind magazine that has launched the careers of countless designers and furniture companies over the years. I would often marvel when people from around the country would write about how difficult it was to find in their neck of the woods (outside the South) - I wonder if the name of the magazine gave magazine buyers the idea that it was only for people in the South? In my opinion, SA showcased the most beautiful homes out of any of the design magazines. I will miss it.

Posted by:Things That Inspire | August 18, 2009 at 03:15 PM

There are no words to describe my disappointment. Like many of the readers, I would wait with great anticipation for each issue and savor every page. I am so saddened and shocked by this news, and I cannot imagine the world of interior design without this glorious magazine. It is one of my greatest pleasures each month and I will miss the magazine like I would miss a dear old friend!!!!

Posted by:kim m. | August 19, 2009 at 02:30 PM

The magazine has been such a great guide to the refinements of Southern archetictuture, interiors, furnishings, gardens, florals and entertainment. What a loss to all of us who appreciate the beauty of these many things that reflect the very best the South has to offer.

Posted by:TH Kaddatz | August 20, 2009 at 02:03 PM

I will never forget the day I bought my first Southern Accents on the newsstand. It was in September 1994, and I was a freshman in high school. I had always loved interior design and architecture, but until I read that issue of Southern Accents, I had never thought about becoming an interior designer. 15 years later, I am a Registered Interior Designer for a large architecture and design firm in Nashville. I subscribe to many design magazines, but Southern Accents has always been my favorite...by far...just ask my colleauges! I am truly heartbroken that such a big part of my journey is now leaving my life. Thank you for inspiring me and for teaching me so much about "beautiful homes, gracious living, and a sense of place". I am forever grateful for all you have done for me and countless others! God Bless!

Posted by:Heather Bates | August 21, 2009 at 02:29 PM

Just wanting to chime in to say thank you for the many years of inspiration and beauty. I am thankful that I have stacks and stacks of past issues as they were too beautiful to discard. I will continue to pull them out and be re-inspired.

Posted by:Regine | August 21, 2009 at 07:15 PM

I can't believe it!!!! I no longer will be able to spend hours pouring over my favorite magazine, Southern Accents, again???? I'm heartbroken. I agree that Time should have chosen any other of their publications to discontinue but this one. My husband takes Time magazine & it has become a thin, nothing of a magazine that I had planned on not renewing. Southern Living has become a sad, sad, parody of the good magazine it used to be-- but Southern Accents was the Queen of all the subscriptions I take. Reading a computer website is nothing-I repeat- nothing like curling up with Southern Accents and a cup of tea & losing myself for a good hour or so. I feel like a member of my family has died.

Posted by:Margie Cox | August 22, 2009 at 02:18 PM

How very sad to loose a true support to the profession of Interior Design and ASID!!! Such a beautiful publication will be missed so very much!!!

I am so incredibly sad. SA has been one of my favorite shelter magazines for many, many years. I have saved every issue since the inception of my subscription in 2003! I even have some dating back to 1999. I think this was a foolish business decision for Time Warner as well and I hope to see SA re-emerge sometime down the road.

Posted by:Kim Swales | August 24, 2009 at 06:18 PM

I am not a southerner however SA is by far one of the Best decorating mags on the market. It is still what other mags used to be, filled with gracious spaces most of us could only dream about. Isn't that what a great publication should do???? Time, please , please reconsider!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by:Rosemary Morteo | August 25, 2009 at 07:12 AM

WHAT AM I GOING TO DO?!? There is no other magazine that gives such great design tips, especially with the horrid design/giant motif tacky wallpaper out there right now. I can't get it from Southern Living because it's dumbed down design for the masses. I will also GLADLY pay more for the magazine to keep it going.

Posted by:Christy | August 25, 2009 at 09:01 AM

I am so sad.....I have been a Southern Accents devotee for many years!!! I shall miss it...miss it...miss it!! It has been my decorating Bible and a source of sheer delight! Whats wrong with Time,inc...are they nuts? Well, anyway, I wish all of the staff the very best and a huge THANK YOU!!! Southern Accents will live on at my house....I've saved so many... may God bless all of you!

Posted by:Carol Miller | August 25, 2009 at 10:05 AM

This is absolutely devastating! I am heartbroken. As a Southern woman who moved from Birmingham, AL to Boston, MA over six years ago, Southern Accents continued to be such a refuge and constant reminder of my heritage. It provided countless inspiration and reminders of the place I call home from across the country.

It is such an elegant, rich publication. Sincere thanks to the Southern Accents family for the many, many years of beautiful interiors and stories, as well as the tips for truly gracious living that you provided. I have learned so much from the magazine.

Posted by:Rebecca Jackson | August 25, 2009 at 12:21 PM

I am devastated. How can Time possibly discontinue this magnificent magazine? It appears that whoever made this unfortunate decision neither understands nor appreciates the Southern graciousness and understated elegance that Southern Acdcents so beautifully defines in each issue. How sad. Please reconsider.

Posted by:Linda | August 25, 2009 at 09:09 PM

I am absolutely stupefied at Time, Inc.'s decision to abandon Southern Accents. I truly do not believe that any other publication embodies the soul of what it means to be a Southerner in the way you do.

Our mothers (mamas!) taught us about gracious living at their nyloned knees and Southerns Accents exemplifies those same principles. Time just plain has bad manners. I'm "fixin" to give them a piece of my mind. They will undoubtedly be amazed that anyone from the South is intelligent enough to pen a cogent letter.

My grandmother always said never to trust a Yankee!!!

Posted by:Lisa Arp | August 26, 2009 at 11:34 AM

To say I am mad, sad and disappointed is an understatement! I can't wrap my head around why other magazines are still in publication. To take away Southern Accents is a mistake! I would like to say Thank You to all the staff for a very fine magazine and will treasure my past issues.

Posted by:April Phillips | August 26, 2009 at 03:29 PM

I will miss SA!! Such a sudden act is rather shocking. It is a truly great decorating/design magazine. Is it definitely final???

Posted by:Kathy | August 26, 2009 at 05:03 PM

Allowing Southern Accents to cease publication is absolutely unthinkable! Is there a specific individual to whom we can direct an appeal?

Posted by:Goldspinner | August 26, 2009 at 07:27 PM

Wow...I'm so sad. I just received this last issue and was pouring over it. It has been my favorite magazine and source of design inspiration. What a tragedy! Time Inc. must really be struggling to make the decision to end such a wonderful publication. Blessings to you all and thank you for all the years of graceful southern design inspiration. Warm regards, M. at frugalinfortworth.wordpress.com

I'm shocked...I was just trying to subscribe when I read the news. My wife and I had just discovered this wonderful magazine when we were selected to install the paver driveway and walkway at the SA Showhouse in Fort Worth. All of us here at Excalibur Paving were looking forward to seeing our work in this fabulous magazine. I guess the showhouse will be the last hurrah.

Posted by:Brian Sizelove | August 27, 2009 at 08:18 AM

I think Time,Inc. has made a really huge mistake... This is so very sad. There are so many trashy magazine's out there, and we have to lose one of the very best. I really love Southern Accents; the beautiful homes were such an inspiration. I know times are tough for everyone, but to have a wonderful magazine like SA fold is just not fair. The subscribers should ban together to save this wonderful publication.

Southern Accents is/was such an outstanding magazine and brought so much pleasure and inspiration to me with every issue. You who made it happen will be greatly missed. I hope that Time, Inc. will reconsider this deplorable decision. Perhaps SA could go quarterly or continue online (last resort--your pages are too beautiful). And will we who live far away be able to see the finished rooms of the 2009 Cotswold-style showhouse? That will continue to go on, won't it? I will truly miss Southern Accents. You can be so proud of your excellent publication. Must everything good go away in this too trashy era?

Posted by:Vivian | September 05, 2009 at 12:19 PM

I just told my dear friend about this horrible news. We are both in mourning! Your magazine has been such an inspiration to me and my business and will be missed greatly. In my eyes it was the best out there!

Posted by:Kristen | September 06, 2009 at 06:11 PM

I was just about to renew my subscription in time to receive the beautiful holiday issues. Of all the magazine glut out there, why does Time Inc. have to close this quality magazine that brings joy to so many? I'm sure there must be many lesser magazines they could close, including Time.
How depressing.

Posted by:Jean | September 07, 2009 at 01:27 AM

I am just sick! I've been a subscriber since the very beginning.I remember when SA was just getting off the ground and Lisa Newsome came and spoke at our Jr.League meeting in GA. I got disorganized this past winter (major painting) and somehow let my sub. expire 3/09. This morning, I was working on getting back on track and tried to renew...and then saw the news. Southern Accents was one of my absolute favorites. Is there anyway I can buy the issues I missed (April-August) - I am hoping I can find Sept. at Barnes & Noble...
Many thanks for any help in getting those issues I missed.
Also, many thanks for the wonderful years of this treasure.
I can't help but to ask, but why is SA going out?

Posted by:Barbara | September 07, 2009 at 03:09 AM

It seems the best interior design books will all now be gone. You provided so much inspiration for my projects. It wasn't just over the top designer houses, but beautiful homes that incorporated the owner's style. Your photography fills many pages of my idea book. Most of all, I'll miss that Southern touch to design which is ignored in many home magazines. It is slightly formal, yet livable. Unique and quirky, but always comfortable. Never cookie-cutter replications.

Hope you will relaunch when the economy returns!

Posted by:Jeff | September 11, 2009 at 10:12 AM

I am so sorry to hear this. I am a Canadian who discovered your magazine while living in Florida for a few years. I have been able to keep the memories of that wonderful time in my life current with each new issue. I discovered that there is something very special about the South, and you have managed to capture what I loved about it in your photographs and articles. You will be sorely missed.

Posted by:Jayne | September 12, 2009 at 11:48 PM

As a "Northerner" I so did enjoy your magazine! The issues kept me company through the years when I was house bound with a new infant. SA inspired me to make my home the best it could be for my husband and seven children. You helped instill in me a love of design and style that has been passed down to my daughters as they begin to make their own homes a haven. Thank you and good bye :(

I just went to Barnes and Noble this morning to pick up the latest issue. To my disappointment, it was not there. I came home to subscribe online, and discovered that it is being discontinued. As a true Southern girl, raised in Louisiana, this magazine was the epitome of TRUE southern style. It will truly be missed!

Posted by:A True G.R.I.T. | September 21, 2009 at 06:23 PM

I cannot believe that Southern Accents is ceasing publication. This magazine has been a stable in my adult life, I've actually shipped my 20 yrs. of coveted issues from Minnesota to Hawaii twice during moves.

We are losing a publication that premiers timeless and elegant interior design, not the current "trend" in flash-in-the-pan decorating. I hope we see you return.

Posted by:Rebecca Hoekstra | September 23, 2009 at 03:02 PM

I can't believe there are not enough readers to keep Southern Accents in publication. This is my favorite decorating magazine! I am extremely disappointed with this news!

Posted by:CAH | September 25, 2009 at 03:52 PM

I am so incredibly disappointed... Southern Accents is BY FAR my favorite decorating magazine... I agree with one of the above comments... it is my 'glass of lemonade' each time I receive it in my mailbox... or better yet more like a great glass of cabernet at the end of a long day. I cannot put into words how I will miss this publication... what a sad day in the publishing world. It just goes to show that mainstream America is winning out... what are we going to do? Thank you for the dozens of issues I have thoroughly enjoyed and saved as a part of my decorating library. I part with just about every decorating magazine... but, I have never thrown away a Southern Accents. SA issues have been a main source of inspiration for our current home renovation. All my best wishes and many many thanks, Emily Harrison

I will also gladly pay much more to keep the publication alive!

Do you sell back issues from 1998-1999? If so how much.

After reading the hundreds of comments from Southern Accents readers like me, who are feeling devastated at the closing of our favorite magazine, I hope that Time will listen to the multitude of readers voices...WE WOULD BE WILLING TO PAY MUCH MORE FOR THE SUBSCRIPTION, IF THAT IS THE PROBLEM...Please, Time, reinstate this , the most superior example of southern culture magazines....Yes, I am devastated...thank you, southern Accents, for 32 years of inspiring, beautiful work.

As many who have posted blogs before me, I am very sad that my favorite magazine has been cancelled. I too have subscribed for many, many years. Currently living in the Midwest, I am surrounded by lovely homes, but they pale in comparison to the graciousness and warmth that is built into southern homes. Southern Accents was an every-other-month visit home for me.

There are very few other upscale shelter magazines that completely enthrall the reader the way that SA did. Other magazines that moniker themselves 'traditional homes' practically apologize every issue for actually publishing anything that looks remotely traditional.

It's getting so hard these days to find decorating magazines and television shows that do not showcase entire rooms decorated under $500...or in just one day! I will truely miss Southern Accents.

I as so saddened about Southern Accents not being published anymore. It is my favorite magazine on homes and decorating. It has introduced me to so many fabulous southern decorators that I would never have met otherwise. I have stacks of many old issues that I cannot stand to part with. Please know that you will be missed terribly. You were a class act!

Like so many avid readers of Southern Accents, we did not know of its closing until the "card" arrived in the mail saying our subscription would be given to "Southern Living" unless we asked for a refund. I literally read the card twice to be certain that I was processing the information correctly. Shocked? You bet. Saddened like so very, very many? Certainly! For the life of me I cannot imagine what Time means by doing this. It has meant so very much to so many for so long. No other periodical will replace it that is for sure. Karen and staff, we hang our heads in disbelief just as I'm sure you did when first informed. Most Cordially, James McKinney in Wichita, Kansas who has read and loved your magazine for more years than he can remember. It was a true class act, gorgeous, extremely well written and photographed. How proud you, Karen and your staff can be for the hours and hours of time you put in to publish such a superior product.

I will be canceling my subscription to Time and to Southern Living as a result of this disaster. We'll take Newsweek instead. Hmmmm? Who can replace Southern Accents? I think we know, no one will. Just pathetic! Time should be ashamed of themselves. Dr. James McKinney in Wichita, Kansas

Is there nothing we can do to keep this Southern tradition alive?

I am devastated beyond words! There is no other magazine with such traditional, rich style and class. This is the magazine whose style I aspire to achieve in my own home. Where can I possibly get inspiration now - that I will actually like. Please say this is a bad dream!!! I would pay more for this magazine, and have a lifetime subscription! Please tell us how to keep our favorite magazine.

This is an unthinkable travesty! I am unbelievably sad. Time will be hearing from me!!! There are so many cheap tasteless publications out there that it was nice to have a publiction that was timeless and classic yet still fresh. This magazine had style and class in spades. What a loss for the design world.

UGH!!! SUNSET??? No offense, but SERIOUSLY???? Not even close! Is there no discriminating taste left in this world? More of the same bland, tasteless, milk toast no one will remember or be excited about. Bring back my Southern Accents TIME INC.!!!

I was so sad to see that S.A.
was not going to published anymore, you have been my design inspiration for many years and one of my most favorite decor magazines. I will miss you so much.

I was shocked to come back from the beach today and find the postcard stating the last issue was done!!! Your magazine is the longest continuous subscription I have ever had. My Mother started giving it to me in 1981 and she passed away in 2007 so I immediateley contacted you to keep my subscription going when the gift from her was going to run out. Yours was the very best of the design magazines, the others are going so glitzy they drive me crazy. Please come back...

All the posts have expressed my feelings and emotions so well concerning the lost of this wonderful periodical that beautifully depicted the warmth and grace of the South. What was the market reseach that drove this decision? Are there any plans for republication of past issues into a book format? Looking for hope...

OH, how I'd rather see Southern Living go instead of Southern Accents! I would give up all of my magazine subscriptions to be able to keep Southern Accents...

Posted by:Tricia | October 27, 2009 at 07:56 AM

I am so sadden and dissapointed by the news. Southern Accents is truly the best design magazine out there. I don't know what I am going to do without it. I so eagerly awaited the arrival of each issue.

I will miss Southern Accents with all my soul. It was my escape and my inspiration for many years. And there is not even going to be a holiday edition.I can't believe it! Best Wishes to the editor and staff. You did a great job!

I am shocked and sick! Of all the magazines to cancel, I can't believe Time Inc. would cancel the most beautiful one, especially before its holiday issue! I think they need to seriously rethink this!

I received the postcard this week, and I was shocked and deeply saddened. I have just finished building, decorating, and furnishing our authentic Southern home, with all the design features of some of the great Southern homes from the Carolinas, and I couldn't have done it without your wonderful magazine. The Southern Accents historical features, with all the wonderful architecture, design, and decorating ideas were my mentor over the last 10 years, and I am currently using all my past issues to help my daughter, who is building her first authentic Southern home. What will we ever do without your fine magazine? Won't you please reconsider? We will miss you so . . . .

I'm afraid I hadn't been using this website, and the first news I received about the end of your publication was a little postcard in the mail. I see I'm late to comment but can only echo: What sad news! I've subscribed to other magazines I thought I _should_ read, but yours was the one I was happiest to see, rushed off to read, lingered over... and the subscription I kept going! I have appreciated the beauty, depth, quality, and expansive sense of living Southern Accents shared with all of us. I agree with the comments above too: I would've certainly paid more for the treat and privilege of reading this beautiful magazine. I'm wondering about back issues too; if there will be no new magazines maybe there are a few that I missed to keep me busy a while...
