I’m battling with a serious case of wanderlust. I think it has something to do with a little vacation envy that’s triggered when colleagues return to the office with a fresh-from-the-beach glow or neighbors whose newspapers pile up after a weeklong getaway.
I’ve decided to plan my own weekend escape and two hotels on my short list happen to be NEW properties that have a fabulous design pedigree: The Viceroy Miami designed by Kelly Wearstler and the Lorien Hotel & Spa designed by Vicente Wolf.
I would love to toss my Tory sandals and white jeans in a weekender and head for sunny Miami, where Wearstler has put her signature eclectic stamp on the resort with organic textures and dramatic elements, like a life-size chess set at the poolside Café Icon. The 162-room property also features a cool rooftop private pool lounge called Club 50 atop the hotel’s tower that looks glamorous and relaxing on those blazing Miami days...and nights!

Designer-cum-photographer Vicente Wolf mixes old and new in Alexandria, Virginia’s 107-room, redbrick Lorien Hotel & Spa. Checking out the website, I’m already plotting which pieces in the hotel from VW Home that I want to buy. I can imagine kicking around King Street in driving shoes that will carry me on garden tours and in out of boutiques and restaurants, like the hotel’s casual BRABO Tasting Room, and into the spa.
